Mergelgrotten...

This is the most amazing series of tunnels that started as a sandstone mine hundreds of years ago. 

In the 1940's, when hiding from the bombing, over 50,000 people lived in these cold and totally dark tunnels.

They were there for so long that people created artwork on the walls and even advertising signs for things to buy or do in nearby Maastricht.






It was an amazing experience to walk through the caves..... although my camera and my glasses blurred from the humidity when we walked back out into the rain.

Haha, you are a true tourist! You have seen more of this country in this short time than many Dutch people in their entire life!
Did you enjoy the rain and thunder and lightning as well?
I just saw pictures of a white Sydney. Too bad the boys have missed that!

Hellooooo - have finally caughtup (again) and whew(!) I too feel like I've been on a whrilwind just reading about everything. Everyday I am torn about which moment appeals more - its continues to look diverse, entertaining, educational and outright terrific. Keep going and see you back in Oz soon.
