Today was simply a wonderful mix of sightseeing, parenting, travelling and friendship.
Wikke and I took all the kids on the train to Utrecht. There, we walked and sat and ate and rode a boat along the canal, and listened to the kids talk and talk and talk. The littlest ones have the most amazingly animated conversations with their toy dolls and puppies and selves. They create universes in which siblings and parents die (!) and kings and queens always win in the end. Oh, and which are peppered with the extremely loud barking of imaginary dogs.
The bigger ones discuss all things relevant to their lives. And when that conversation falters, they revert to pikachu hand games. And tickling. Mostly they stroll with their arms around each other and discuss ways to annoy their Mums (ways which NEVER work, may I add!).

We BIGGEST ones discussed heaven and earth and all things in between, while appreciating our environment (and resolving kid-arguments between sentences). This was an unexpected sight along the canal....

While we were walking through the pedestrian area of the town, Wikke was stopped by a couple who recognised her from her book cover (click here for details of her book - in Dutch only, I'm afraid) and who had been so inspired by her travels through Malaysia and Thailand with her children that they had taken a very similar trip with their own children. They had used her book as their own "lonely planet" type guide, and were thrilled to see her in the flesh. They sometimes look in on her blog too, which means that may look here as well (having met me today!!) "Hi!!".It was wonderful for Wikke to know that her book had impacted someone else's lives so positively. I was just damned proud for her. And embarrassed for me because I was standing there like a fool because I don't understand Dutch. Why oh why aren't I fluent in 7 languages (at least)?

Hi Fe, What a great trip for you so far. Funny, I was in Utrecht last Friday. It's a beautiful city. I have lived there for a couple of years next to the famous HEMA. Enjoy your time with Wikke. x Marielle
Funnily enough a month ago I was in Utrecht too! I have always lived close to Utrecht, but never really seen the city (I know..). Until my last holidays in Holland. Is that weird or what? I loved it. Such a beautiful little city. Amsterdam, but smaller (sorry, but it still can't beat Amsterdam... have you been?). Enjoy and have a great time with your beautiful friend!
Love, Eveline
Oh dear! I have never been in Utrecht! Shame on me? No, I don't think so. I'm not a big city person, so I don't need to see it.
But I'm glad you are enjoying it. And not just you, the boys as well. Keep up the good work!!
Trui xx
Har! All my Dutch friends are commenting now!! Yippeee!! What a shame you weren't in Utrecht THIS week Marielle! You too Eveline! Oh well... I guess we'll just have to catch up in Sydney.
I have been to Amsterdam, but not this trip yet. We're going on Sunday and I can't wait!!
Trui I just can't believe that you haven't been to Utrecht!? It's not a big city at all, i promise, and a trip along the peaceful canal is a wonderful way to pass an afternoon. We ARE having a wonderful time ... but I'm already feeling a bit sad about our trip ending on Monday. Time always passes way too quickly when you're having such a great time. xxx
Leiden is more beautiful than Utrecht. Utrecht is really a big city with uglyness and all. Leiden is like a village, but a city though. All beautiful old buildings and historical places. More quiet than big Utrecht. Delft is also such a lovely nice old town. Two cities for next time!
And don't forget Rotterdam!!!
