Here is a pic of me at my 21st birthday party... smack in the middle of that notorious fashion decade. You're lucky it's not in colour, or you might be blinded by the gold colour of my glittery outfit.
Big hair, big shoulders, big nails, big cocktail.... *shudder*....

And here I am with my peeps, with the Sydney Town Hall behind us. My "uniform" was always to wear a blazer... unless it was boiling hot in which case it was a leotard under linen pants (or my favourite Stuart Membry shorts, M! Sorry.. can't find a pic of those!)....

I spent the end of the '80's living in the US. And I dyed my head dark brown (the one and only time in my life) to see in the new decade. This is me in NYC on the last day of the '80's....

I spent the beginning of the '80's in the whirl of the Sydney rock 'n roll scene, and the modelling scene. Superficiality at it's best. It's a time that I doubt will come again (way before grunge... it really was all champagne and cocaine) and I guess I was lucky to be a part of it, but it wasn't all happiness.
I then moved in to the corporate world.... when corporate greed was at it's zenith.... and life was all about long lunches and even longer expense accounts. It's quite amazing to think back upon it with the perspective of today's economy.
I'm still not quite sure why I had such a strong urge to leave my country, but I did. I happily exchanged designer outfits for t-shirts and cargo shorts and travelled from Backpacker Lodge to Backpacker Lodge. I was ribbed by my new friends about being the only backpacker travelling with a suitcase and a blow-dryer! Perhaps that's why I'm so extremely the other way these days!
The best thing about the '80's for me? The friends that I made in San Francisco. They still count amongst my closest friends today. I'm not sure if it's because we were thrown together in the horror of the aftermath of the '89 earthquake, or if it was kismit that put us all in that backpackers lodge at the same time. Whatever it was, I'm eternally grateful for it.

So...I'm not the only one with the 80's on my mind recently.
Maybe there's something in the water--giving us all flashbacks.
I love all your photos!
And I love you as the only backpacker with the suitcase.
My friend (that I met in Sydney) spent several years in San Francisco too. She loved it.
wooo hoooo you glamour puss !!what a lovely image ... we should have all done our 21st birthday parties .... I was in the middle of my preppie phase and looked very white bread ! complete with very fake blonde bob !!
thanks so much fe for playing along - can't wait to see what M comes up with ....
towards the end of the eighties my crew all did the blazer out at night thingo - mostly with a body suit under .... and a short ass skirt .... hee hee I am loving this :) le xoxoxoox
Oh those bodysuits!! I have gazillions of them... all black! With those damn press-studs in the crutch. Ouch. I am tall... and those press-studs would often pop if I raised my arm suddenly!
And the blazer thing was purely a leftover from Dynasty / Dallas etc. A way to wear shoulder pads ALL the time.
Too funny. I kept the blazer look pretty far into the nineties, but took out all of the shoulder pads.
I suppose our kids will wear baggy t-shirts and low-hanging oversized shorts when they're flashing back to the noughties.
xox
I meant HAD them. Not HAVE them!! I swear on all that is good in this world that I am not still wearing body-suits! TRULY!!
And it was funny, Dina, to be the only backpacker with a suitcase (and make up and a cocktail dress and jewellery just in case)! I changed completely though, and when DH and I went to India, I spent 6 months with nothing more than a very small backpack.
I don't USE a hairdryer these days, rarely wear jewellery and even more rarely apply makeup.
I suppose I OD'd on it all back then!
Oh god, the unstructured blazer! Those are all SUCH 80s looks and you were (are) such a glamourpuss.
I haven't prepared my 80s thing yet. Will rifle through my albums tonight...
Wowee. That 21st outfit is amazing! How hot are you!
Your 80's era was full on!
Great pics, I was still at school in the 80's so nothing so glamorous for me.
aha - your fabulous friday 80's fashions have given me more ideas for the 80's party we are attending tonight - hair is a problem as my hair was short in the 80's and is now shoulder length - so Im off to buy cheap new wave gel and blue eye shadow this afternoon !!
great pics - go the SM shorts !!
Even those terrible 80's fashion can't disguise that you were a beautiful, vibrant and life-loving person! Nothing much has changed...
Wow! You gorgeous thing you :-)
I have another friend who backpacked with her suitcase... unfortunately she is still lost in superficiality, but we love her just the same!
